On Wednesday, 29 August, UN Patron of the Oceans and FXTM Brand Ambassador Lewis Pugh made history.

He is the first person to swim the full 530km length of the English Channel following Channel Swimming Association rules – with just a pair of goggles, Speedo briefs and a cap for protection.

FXTM is the Lead Partner of the Long Swim, which has been covered by Sky News since the day it began – on 12 July, in Land’s End.

The driving purpose of the challenge was to raise awareness of the perils the oceans face due to plastic pollution, climate change and overfishing.

Main highlights of the Long Swim:

  • Lewis’ determination never waned, despite multiple jellyfish stings, a shoulder injury, terrible weather conditions and the danger of getting sucked under ships
  • The UK’s Environment Secretary Michael Gove was one of the first to greet Lewis at the FXTM-finish line on Shakespeare Beach, Dover
  • The swim was covered by the UK’s biggest outlets, including BBC and Sky News
  • This is the first challenge in a series for the Action for Oceans’ campaign; an initiative to turn 30% of the world’s oceans into Marine Protected Areas
