He walked a long way from a Jewish kid in Nazi-occupied Hungary to one of the most successful businessmen in history.

He immigrated to England back in 1947 and worked as a waiter and a railway porter before he got a job in a merchant bank.

Since he couldn’t get a proper education during the World War 2, he craved to get into the London School of Economics, and his good job at the bank helped him to do that. Soros got his Ph.D. in Economics and moved on to New York City.

He started as an arbitrage trader, made money, went back to England to study philosophy, and came up with his Theory of Reflexivity, which he claims to underlay his financial success.

In 1970s, he founded his first hedge fund that later developed into the world-famous Soros Fund Management. In 1992, he made a profit of $1 billion during the 1992 Black Wednesday UK currency crisis in 1 day from a single transaction.

This episode gave him a reputation of “the man who broke the Bank of England”.

By 2018, after donating $18 billion to his philanthropic agency, Open Society Foundations, his net worth is over $8 bln.
